SUPPORTING YOU THROUGH EVERY STAGE: HOW CHINESE MEDICINE NURTURES YOU FROM PREGNANCY TO POSTPARTUM
Pregnancy is one of the most extraordinary journeys a woman's body will ever undertake. Yet so much of the care available centres on the baby, while the mother's wellbeing can easily become secondary.
At Escapada, we believe mothers deserve just as much support—from the very first weeks of pregnancy through birth and into those transformative months after your baby arrives.
Chinese Medicine has been caring for women throughout pregnancy for thousands of years. It doesn't replace modern maternity care; it complements it beautifully. Alongside your midwife or obstetric team, it offers support for the parts of pregnancy that often go unspoken: the overwhelming fatigue, emotional changes, physical discomforts, and the need to feel cared for yourself.
THE FIRST TRIMESTER: HONOURING THE NEED FOR REST
The first twelve weeks can feel like an invisible marathon. From the outside, very little may appear to have changed. Inside, however, your body is working around the clock to grow an entirely new life.
It's no surprise that so many women experience profound exhaustion during early pregnancy. This isn't a sign that anything is wrong—it's your body's way of asking you to slow down. Nausea, fatigue and the desire to rest are all part of this remarkable process. In Chinese Medicine, we understand this as your body's energy turning inward, where the most important work is taking place.
Emotionally, the first trimester can feel equally overwhelming. Even when a pregnancy is deeply wanted, the enormity of what's beginning may bring anxiety, mood swings or a quiet sense of uncertainty that's difficult to explain. These feelings are incredibly common, and something we support regularly in clinic.
Ways to support yourself during the first trimester
Eat little and often, choosing warm, nourishing, easy-to-digest meals.
Rest whenever you need to, without guilt—your body is asking for it.
Choose gentle movement, such as walking or prenatal yoga, rather than pushing through fatigue.
Acupuncture may help ease nausea, promote emotional balance and support your body as it adapts to early pregnancy.
THE SECOND TRIMESTER: BUILDING STRENGTH AND NOURISHMENT
For many women, the second trimester brings a welcome sense of relief. Energy often returns, nausea settles, and pregnancy begins to feel more tangible. Your bump grows, your baby starts to move, and you may find yourself settling into a new rhythm.
In Chinese Medicine, this is a time to nourish. The focus shifts towards building blood, strengthening energy and supporting the vitality that both mother and baby need for the months ahead.
Of course, the second trimester isn't always symptom-free. As your body changes, new challenges often emerge.
We commonly support women experiencing:
Lower back or pelvic pain
Round ligament discomfort
Heartburn and digestive changes
Headaches
Sleep disturbances
Mood changes, heightened emotions or vivid dreams
Fatigue that returns despite feeling better earlier in pregnancy
Supporting these symptoms early can help you feel stronger and more comfortable as pregnancy progresses.
THE THIRD TRIMESTER: PREPARING FOR BIRTH
The final weeks of pregnancy are a time of preparation—for your body, your baby and your mind. It's often a season filled with both excitement and uncertainty.
As birth approaches, sleep can become more difficult. Pelvic discomfort, swelling, breathlessness and general heaviness are common. Emotionally, many women describe feeling both eager to meet their baby and anxious about labour itself.
Chinese Medicine has some of its most well-established applications during this stage.
From around 36 weeks, many women choose a course of pre-birth acupuncture. These treatments are designed to prepare the body for labour by encouraging cervical readiness, supporting pelvic balance and helping baby settle into an optimal position. It's one of the most popular pregnancy treatments we offer at Escapada because so many women value feeling physically and mentally prepared for birth.
For babies presenting breech between approximately 33 and 36 weeks, we may also recommend moxibustion—a traditional warming technique used on a specific acupuncture point alongside your midwifery or obstetric care. As always, this should be discussed with your maternity team before treatment begins.
THE FOURTH TRIMESTER: REBUILDING THE MOTHER
This is the stage of motherhood we feel is most often overlooked—and perhaps the one that deserves the greatest care.
The fourth trimester refers to the first twelve weeks after birth. While the world naturally turns its attention to your new baby, mothers are often expected to recover remarkably quickly.
But birth isn't something to bounce back from. It's something to recover from.
Giving birth is one of the most significant physical events your body will ever experience. Within hours of delivery, pregnancy hormones fall dramatically. Combined with interrupted sleep, physical healing, breastfeeding, and the emotional adjustment to becoming a parent, it's an enormous transition.
Chinese Medicine has always recognised this period as one of profound importance. Across many East Asian cultures, the tradition of the "sitting month" honours new mothers with intentional rest, warmth and nourishing food, recognising that the way a woman is supported after birth can influence her health for years to come.
This philosophy continues to shape the care we provide every day at Escapada.
Common postpartum concerns we support include:
Deep exhaustion that persists despite rest
Hair loss around three months after birth
Low mood or emotional vulnerability
Anxiety and overwhelm
Challenges with milk supply
A lingering sense of depletion
Pelvic floor recovery and postnatal healing
These experiences are common—but they shouldn't simply be endured. They are your body's way of asking for nourishment, rest and support.
